A 28-year-old construction worker, whose decomposed body was found in the trunk of his car parked outside a discount hardware store, was apparently bludgeoned to death, coroner’s officials said Saturday.

Sheriff’s deputies found the body of Salvador Hurtado Giles of San Juan Capistrano inside his 1984 Ford LTD on Friday morning after a shopper reported a stench coming from the automobile, said Lt. Richard J. Olson, a Sheriff’s Department spokesman. The car was in the parking lot of the Home Club at 27401 La Paz Road.

According to authorities, Giles’ wife reported her husband and his car missing Monday evening. Olson said she had last seen Giles as he left their house at 3:30 p.m. on March 29.
