A San Diego man who allegedly robbed a Pacific Beach bank Monday morning was arrested a block away while attempting to flee, authorities said.

Michael Merrick, 40, allegedly robbed the Wells Fargo Bank at 1701 Garnet Ave. about 10:30 a.m. after threatening a teller with what appeared to be a handgun, San Diego police spokesman Bill Robinson said. The robber left with an undisclosed amount of money.

Police stopped a man fitting the bandit’s description minutes later in the 1600 block of Hornblend Street, Robinson said. Merrick was found to be carrying the missing cash and a plastic handgun, Robinson said.

Police planned to question Merrick about other recent robberies before turning him over to the FBI, Robinson said. Merrick lives in the 3000 block of Glendora Avenue in Pacific Beach.
