PREP ROUNDUP : Ray Retires 17 Batters in Row as Irvine Beats Mission Viejo

Bob Ray retired 17 consecutive batters at one point, but needed seventh-inning help from Mike Seal as Irvine defeated Mission Viejo, 3-1, in a South Coast League baseball game Monday at Irvine.

From the final out in the first inning to the end of the sixth, Ray (5-0) retired every batter he faced for Irvine (10-4-1, 3-1-1). He allowed a single and a walk in the seventh before being relieved. Seal allowed a hit and struck out three to get the save.

Aron Garcia had three hits and an RBI, and Ryan O’Toole had two hits and scored a run for Irvine.

In another South Coast League game:

Dana Hills 8, Capistrano Valley 2--Scott Holtz had three hits, Jaime Todd had two hits and scored three runs and Tim Wolter had two hits and an RBI for host Dana Hills.

In the West Anaheim Lions Tournament:

Garden Grove 14, Sonora 0--Junior right-hander Nathan Blea had a perfect game for 6 1/3 innings but allowed a walk and a single before finishing the consolation-round game. Bryce McHale, Bobby Rosa, Jim Sebreros, Tyson Garner and Joe Aguirre had two hits each for Garden Grove (4-6).

In nonleague baseball:

Kennedy 13, Magnolia 2--Rod Rosales had a home run, two doubles and four RBIs and Eric Karter had a single, double and a triple and scored two runs for host Kennedy (9-6).

In nonleague golf:

El Dorado 211, Canyon 215--Erik Wolf shot a one-under 34 for El Dorado at at Anaheim Hills Golf Course.

Canyon 215, Brea-Olinda 246-- Derek Clare of Canyon shot a two-over 37 for Canyon at Anaheim Hills Golf Course.

Marina 386, Western 396 (18 holes)--Tiger Woods shot an even-par 69 for Western and Brian Rea shot a 70 for Marina at Meadowlark Golf Course in Huntington Beach.

In nonleague tennis:

University 9, La Jolla 9 (University wins on games, 70-69)--John Bowerbank won the deciding match as host University (12-1) upset La Jolla, the No. 1-ranked team in San Diego Section. Bowerbank swept his sets, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. Joey Frantz also swept, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1, for University.
