OXNARD : Vandals Paint Gang Graffiti at Church

Share

A Catholic church in Oxnard was vandalized over the weekend when gang graffiti was painted in two restrooms, church officials said.

The Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in the 400 block of West Pleasant Valley Road was defaced Friday or Saturday, said Sabino Rubio, who teaches catechism at the church.

“It is petty what they’re doing,” Rubio said. “But it’s getting out of hand.”

The repairs are expected to cost more than $100, said Father Frank de la Vega.

About a month ago, vandals painted a statue of the Virgin Mary black and items have been stolen from the church.

Rubio said he did not believe that the incidents were hate crimes.
