COSTA MESA : Golf Course to Get Clubhouse Elevator

Share

Responding to pleas from handicapped patrons, the city will install an elevator at the Costa Mesa Golf and Country Club clubhouse, a 25-year-old building that was not constructed with handicapped-access features.

DTEC Construction Inc. of Gardena will start building the elevator shaft next week. The City Council awarded the firm an $87,000 contract. The city also plans to modify for handicapped patrons two upstairs bathrooms at the clubhouse, said golf course superintendent Bob Shipley.

The elevator will be installed just west of the main entrance to the clubhouse, located at 1701 Golf Course Drive. Although the state requires new buildings to be handicapped-accessible, it does not require that old buildings be improved to meet the new standards, Shipley said.

“The state didn’t say we had to do this, but we decided to bring this in so handicapped people could have access,” he said, adding that banquets are regularly held in the upstairs rooms.

Construction will last about 60 days, Shipley said.
