CSUF Student Selected for Soviet Peace Tour

Bill Jacobson, 18, a graduate of Cypress High School and resident of Cypress, has been selected as one of 75 American youth to tour the Soviet Union from July 15 through Aug. 15 as a peace ambassador with the Peace Child Foundation.

He and the others will be given a three-day orientation in Washington before moving on to Moscow and six other Soviet cities.

They will join 90 Soviet youth to produce the musical “Peace Child,” about an American boy and a Soviet girl who bring peace to their countries.

Jacobson, a Cal State Fullerton student, said the foundation, based in Fairfax, Va., promotes international youth exchange and peace education through the performing arts.

Cathy Jack, a Sunday-school teacher, active community worker and member of the Huntington Beach Junior Women’s Club (HBJWC), was named Volunteer of the Year by the Orange County branch of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs.

Blake Alban, a senior at Marina High School in Huntington Beach and captain of its championship golf team, won second place in the federation’s Teen Citizen of the Year competition. He earlier was named Teen Citizen of the Year by HBJWC.

A class at Mariners Elementary School in Newport Beach won first place and $250 in competition with more than 200 classes from Orange, San Bernardino and Riverside counties in the Los Angeles Times’ Geography Safari contest.

The Mariners group, comprising Alison Arnold, Travis Uhl, Linda Weng, Elizabeth Saienni and Erin Dalmann, won in the third-through-fifth-grade category.

During the eight-week contest, students wrote essays about how certain news events would affect other countries and/or people in other parts to the world.

Irvine resident Marcia Vaughn has been named Communicator of the Year by the Orange County Chapter of the International Assn. of Business Communicators. She earned the award while working for Coldwell Banker Residential Group in Mission Viejo.

Midge Wheeler, a member of the Crowell Insurance Agency in Irvine, has been named the 1991 Insurance Woman of the Year by the Insurance Women Assn. of Orange County. She is a Whittier resident.

Marriott Hotels, Resorts and Suites has named Ibrahim Barghout Director of Catering of the Year and Chad Sitkowski Beverage Manager of the Year. Both work at the Newport Beach Marriott Hotel and Tennis Club, and both live in Newport Beach.

Scholarship awards for a 12-day stay at the National Audubon Society’s Audubon Camp in the West in Wyoming have been presented by the South Coast Audubon Society to Mark Lynn of Dana Point and Grace Van Thillo of San Clemente.

Lynn is a naturalist/instructor at the Orange County Marine Institute, and Van Thillo is a teacher at the Las Palmas Model School in San Clemente.

The South Coast Literacy Council has graduated the following tutors from its Speakers of Other Languages program:
