Courier, continuing his streak of outstanding tennis, ousted John McEnroe, 6-2, 6-2.

Courier got 73% of his first serves in and, rapidly firing both shots and serves, broke the second and eighth games of the first set.

“I served well and returned well,” Courier said. “I always went ahead of him and that was good for me. I played better than usual.”

McEnroe said he was unable to put pressure on Courier.

“I could not win a point when I wanted to,” he said.

Chang said he is looking forward to his meeting with Edberg, a four-time winner of the Japan Open.

“It’s going to be a tough and close match,” the fifth-seeded Chang said.

Lori McNeil, seeded seventh, made it into the women’s final with a hard-fought, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 victory over fifth-seeded Laura Gildemeister.

Second-seeded Sabine Appelmans of Belgium will be McNeil’s opponent in the final. Appelmans beat Japanese qualifier Rika Hiraki, 6-4, 6-4.

Third-seeded Andre Agassi was ousted in the quarterfinals of the Count of Godo tournament at Barcelona, losing a 2 1/2-hour match to Guillermo Perez Roldan of Argentina, 6-0, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-3).
