BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Henderson’s Quest Is Put on Hold

Rickey Henderson is not expected to resume his pursuit of Lou Brock’s record for stolen bases until the Oakland Athletics open a four-game series against the Angels in Anaheim Stadium Monday night.

The cramp that Henderson suffered in his left calf while running out a ground ball Thursday against the Minnesota Twins was upgraded to a muscle strain Friday night.

Henderson, who has 937 steals and needs one to tie Brock’s record, sat out the opener of a three-game series against the Seattle Mariners and was termed doubtful for today’s and Sunday’s games by trainer Barry Weinberg. “His status was day to day, now it’s series to series,” Weinberg said.

Said A’s Manager Tony La Russa: “If this was Sept. 15 and we were tied for first he still wouldn’t play tomorrow and it would be doubtful he’d play Sunday. This is only April. There’s no reason to be foolish. I mean, he’s being treated, but I really doubt he’ll play this weekend.”

Brock said he has changed flight reservations three times while waiting for Henderson to break his record but will be unable to attend the series in Anaheim.
