CANYON SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT : Fountain Valley Wins Title by Blanking Los Alamitos

Using her overpowering fastball and control, Rae Rice pitched a two-hitter as Fountain Valley defeated Los Alamitos, 6-0, in the championship game of the Lancer Division of the Canyon High School softball tournament Saturday at Yorba Park in Anaheim.

The senior right-hander struck out 11 batters, including five of the first eight she faced, and walked none as she improved her record to 9-1. Cleanup batter Kandi Rehard had Los Alamitos’ only hits, singles in the second and seventh innings.

Rice’s teammates got eight hits off Los Alamitos pitcher Caroline Dolan.

Fountain Valley (13-2) scored its first two runs in the second inning when left fielder Danelle Lovetro and first baseman Michelle Kravik reached on infield hits and scored on a fielder’s choice and a hit batsman.

The Barons added two more in the bottom of the fourth with two outs. Third baseman Jennifer Allchin reached on an error, moved to third on a single by shortstop Shannon Dolan, and scored on a fielder’s choice. Shannon Dolan, who advanced to third base on a wild pitch, stole home when neither Caroline Dolan nor catcher Rebecca Rosetti called time after the wild pitch.

Fountain Valley scored again in the fifth and sixth innings. Second baseman Kristen Santa Cruz was three for four for Fountain Valley and Shannon Dolan was two for four.

In other tournament games:

Canyon 3, Sunny Hills 2--Canyon scored three runs on four consecutive hits in the seventh inning to win the the Comanche Division championship. Canyon’s Dalynne Large led off the seventh with a single, Sanetha Thomas tripled to score Large, Stephanie Carew doubled to score Thomas and tie the score and Nina Lindenberg singled to score Carew with the winning run. Sara Roberts (10-1) pitched a five-hitter and struck out five for Canyon (14-3). Sunny Hills is 11-5.

St. Paul 1, La Habra 0 (10 innings)--Lisa Perez squeezed home Betty Cervantes in St. Paul’s victory in the third-place game of the Comanche Division. Danielle Ortega gave up two hits and struck out 16 batters for La Habra (12-3).

Agoura 1, Mater Dei 0 (nine innings)--Melissa Thatcher (6-6) struck out six for Agoura in the fifth-place game of the Lancer Division. Jennifer Clark (5-1) took the loss for Mater Dei (10-4).

Walnut 3, Westminster 2--The Mustangs scored in the bottom of the fifth to break a 2-2 tie in the fifth-place game of the Comanche Division. Westminster dropped to 10-7 on the year.

Thousand Oaks 1, Pacifica 0--Each team had just three hits, but Thousand Oaks managed to get to Pacifica (7-9) ace Jennifer Surface for a run in the bottom of the fourth inning in the seventh-place game of the Lancer Division.

Foothill 7, Villa Park 0--Kathy Shortall pitched the first two innings and Leeann Gonzalez picked up the victory by going the last five for Foothill (12-2) in the seventh-place game of the Comanche Division. Foothill catcher Kelley Green went two for three with three RBIs.
