A 23-year-old Newbury Park man was in critical but stable condition in a Thousand Oaks hospital Sunday after surgery for gunshot wounds suffered at a weekend party.

Daniel Tillman, who was shot in the abdomen and the arm, remained in the intensive care unit at Los Robles Regional Medical Center, a nursing supervisor said.

Ventura County sheriff’s deputies discovered Tillman lying in the street in front of a house at 217 Henrietta Ave. about 9:30 p.m. Friday night.

A crowd of about 200 youths surrounded him.

Witnesses said a man wearing a Raiders cap, a wig and possibly a shirt over his head ran up to Tillman in the street and fired a small handgun three or four times.

The assailant then ran to a waiting car.

The party was at the home of Jason Zschernig, a Newbury Park High School student, neighbors said.

Jason said he had invited five or six friends over and the other people tried to crash the party.

Neighbor Tricia Hammond said the young people were well-behaved but so many of them filled the street that she called the Sheriff’s Department.

She said officers drove by the gathering before the shooting but took no action.

The Sheriff’s Department could not confirm whether officers had been called to the scene before the shooting.
