A 23-year-old Moorpark man was in serious condition at Los Robles Regional Medical Center after a fast-moving passenger train hit the county-owned pickup truck that he was driving, a hospital spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Enrique Magdaleno was taken to the hospital with major head and internal injuries after a collision with an Amtrak train near Somis Road on Monday, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.

Magdaleno was driving the pickup truck across the Southern Pacific Railroad tracks at 11:33 a.m. Monday when it was hit by a train traveling about 70 m.p.h.

Train engineer David Altman, 36, of Reseda told CHP officers that he sounded the horn before the impact, but that Magdaleno apparently did not see or hear the train coming.

The impact knocked the vehicle about 70 feet from the crossing, throwing Magdaleno from the truck, the CHP spokesman said.

Ventura County water works manager Reddy Pakala said Magdaleno, a maintenance worker, was checking pump stations along the tracks when the accident occurred.
