TRACK ROUNDUP : Mission Viejo Girls Cruise to Victory Over El Toro

Hilary Mann won the 100- and 300-meter hurdles and the triple jump, and Andrea Dean won the 100-meter dash and the 200 dash as Mission Viejo defeated El Toro, 92-35, in a South Coast League girls’ track meet Thursday at El Toro.

Dean won the 100 in 12.6 seconds and the 200 in 26.7. Mann won the 100 hurdles in 15.0 and the 300 hurdles in 46.6.

Mission Viejo swept the top four places in the 100 hurdles as Dean (16.1) finished second to Mann, Heather Sterlin (16.2) third and Toyann Burnett (16.4) finished fourth. Shannon Dean, Andrea’s younger sister, was second in the 300 hurdles with a time of 47.3.

Mann won the triple jump with a jump of 33 feet 6 inches. Other winners for Mission Viejo were Robin Logue in the 400 meters (1:01.0), Sterlin in the long jump (16-7), Nina Foster in the shotput (31-9) and Genny Allen in the discus (100-0 1/2).

In another South Coast League girls’ meet:

Irvine 81 1/2, Capistrano Valley 45 1/2--Tracy Broughton won the 100 hurdles (16.0), the high jump (5-2) and the long jump (16-6 1/2), Jennifer Gillis won the 400 meters (1:00.5) and the 800 (2:20.9) and Kelly Roda won the 1,600 (5:25.8) and the 3,200 (11:31.8) for Irvine.

In South Coast League boys’ meets:

Capistrano Valley 69, Irvine 67--Host Irvine led, 67-64, but had a false start and disqualified on the last event, the 1,600 relay, and Capistrano Valley won.

Bernie Chapman won the long jump (21-5) and the triple jump (42-11 3/4) and John Allen won the shotput (54-11 3/4) and the discus throw (154-3) for Capistrano Valley. Capistrano Valley also won the 400 relay (44.5). John Peck won the 300 hurdles (40.5) and Bill Allen won the pole vault (13-0) for Irvine.

El Toro 69, Mission Viejo 67--Senior Jason Brizic of host El Toro pole-vaulted 14-0. Wil Vark won the 200 meters (22.4) for El Toro and El Toro won the 1,600 relay (3:30.4).

In Sea View League boys’ meets:

Newport Harbor 70, Woodbridge 61--Host Newport Harbor clinched the victory in the mile relay (3:33.4), which was anchored by Mike Hancock.

Brent Busch won the 110 high hurdles (15.2) and the 300 intermediate hurdles (40.3) and Tony Mancuso won the shotput (54-10 1/2) and the discus (144-7) for Newport Harbor. Newport Harbor also won the 400 relay (44.8).

Corona del Mar 70, Tustin 66--Senior Keith Miller pole-vaulted 14-0 to lead Corona del Mar.

Saddleback 86, University 50--Eddie Salinas won the 3,200 (9:45.9) and the 800 (2:01.6) for Saddleback.

Gil McCombs won the shotput (51-6) and Modesto Tavares won the discus (158-9 1/2) for Saddleback.

In Sunset League girls’ meets:

Fountain Valley 77, Westminster 50--Sophomore Eleanor Tolson won three events and anchored the relay team that won another for host Fountain Valley.

Tolson won the 100 hurdles in 14.7, the 300 hurdles in 46.8 and the 200 in 26.2. She was also the anchor on Fountain Valley’s 400 relay team, which won in 51.8.

In an Empire League boys’ meet:

Esperanza 80, Cypress 55--Mark Parlin won the shotput and the discus for visiting Esperanza. Parlin, a senior, had a toss of 57-7 1/2 in the shotput. His winning discus throw was 186-3 1/2.

In an Empire League girls’ meet:

Los Alamitos 86, Loara 35--Cavetera Mitchell, the younger sister of former Orange County prep football star Erik Mitchell, won the 100-yard dash (11.3) and the 200-yard dash (26.4) for Los Alamitos.

In an Orange League boys’ meet:

Brea-Olinda 71, Savanna 63--Justin Curley won the 1,600 (4:33) and Tom Breen won the 110 high hurdles (15.2) for host Brea-Olinda.

In a Century League boys’ meet:

Santa Ana Valley 78, Villa Park 58--Santa Ana Valley won the 400 relay in 44.3. Brian Uyeda won the 300 intermediate hurdles in 41.6 for visiting Villa Park.

In an Angelus League boys’ meet:

Mater Dei 93, Bishop Amat 19--Mater Dei won the 400 relay in 43.1 and the Monarchs’ Derek Sparks won the shotput (52-0).
