A smoldering fire in the walls of a three-story apartment building sent smoke into the sky above Studio City Friday, but caused no injuries, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

The fire began about 7:20 p.m. in the building in the 4200 block of north Laurel Canyon Boulevard. Firefighters were removing wall-paneling to determine the source of the fire, but it was believed to have been caused by workers using a torch for repair work, said fire department spokesman Jim Wells.

The blaze was confined to one side of the building along all three floors, he said. The fire was under control by 8:15 p.m., Wells said. A damage estimate was not immediately available.
