Monica Seles overpowered Italy’s Federica Bonsignori and needed only 49 minutes for a 6-1, 6-0 quarterfinal victory Friday in the Virginia Slims of Houston.

Bonsignori, ranked 40th in the world, held serve in the second game of the match but then won only two points over the next three games. She won only 23 points in the match.

Second-seeded Mary Joe Fernandez trailed 2-5 in the first set before beating Ann Grossman of Grove City, Ohio, 7-5, 7-5.

It was Fernandez’s first match of the tournament. She drew a first-round bye and won her second-round match by forfeit when Halle Cioffe withdrew because of an injury.

Zina Garrison was released from West Houston Hospital early Friday. She suffered dehydration after her second-round loss to Gigi Fernandez late Thursday and forfeited her scheduled doubles appearance.

Tournament officials said Garrison, who is ranked eighth in the world, was in “good spirits” Friday and was resting at home. She had complained of stomach and back cramps and had begun vomiting after her loss to Fernandez.

Marianne Werdel moved into the semifinals of the Volvo Women’s Open with a 7-6, 6-0 victory over Japan’s Misumi Miyauchi 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 at Bangkok.

Werdel next will play Naoko Sawamatsu of Japan, who beat Monique Javar of Great Britain, 6-2, 6-3.

The draw at next week’s Monte Carlo Open has Bjorn Borg, returning to tournament tennis after an eight-year retirement, playing clay-court specialist Jordi Arrese of Spain on Tuesday.

Arrese figures to be a tough opponent. The 26-year-old Spaniard beat France’s Guy Forget, the world’s fourth-ranked player, two weeks ago in Barcelona. He is ranked 54th in the world after being as high as 28th last year.
