At the Mission Viejo High School Invitational:

Eric Diehl of Mission Viejo broke two meet records and was named boys’ most valuable swimmer for the second consecutive year.

Diehl, a senior, won the 200 freestyle in 1:38.20, clipping more than a full second off the previous mark of 1:39.27 set by Mission Viejo’s Jeff Jorgensen in 1986. Diehl was almost four seconds ahead of runner-up Chad Carvin (1:42.07) of Laguna Hills.

In the 500 freestyle, Diehl set another meet record with a 4:26.27 performance. The previous best was 4:29.15, set by Mission Viejo’s David Louder in 1983.

Diehl also swam the third leg of the Diablos’ winning 1:28.94 effort in the 200-freestyle relay. But he was unable to overcome Carvin’s four-second lead in the anchor leg of the 400-freestyle relay, won by Laguna Hills’ Shuichi Matsumoto, Ian Gilbert, Bryan Stoeckel and Carvin in 3:14.48.

Mission Viejo sophomore Shona Baille was chosen girls’ most valuable swimmer after winning the 200 individual medley in 2:09.65 and the 100 freestyle in 53.85.

Poway won the boys’ team title with 445 points, although it failed to win an event. Mission Viejo was second at 392 and Laguna Hills third at 381 points. Mission Viejo won the girls’ team championship with 514.5 points, Poway was second at 388.5 and Mater Dei third at 256.
