Rick Mears broke his own Phoenix International Raceway qualifying record on the way to winning the pole position for today’s Valvoline 200. His fast lap of 168.334 m.p.h. broke the record of 168.169 that he set last April on the one-mile oval. Michael Andretti, who had a qualifying speed of 167.989 m.p.h., will start on the outside of the front row.
