Erburu to Head Huntington Board

Share

R. Stanton Avery, founder and former chairman of the Avery Dennison Corp., announced Monday that he will retire as chairman of the board of trustees of the Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens.

Avery will step down effective July 1; Robert F. Erburu, chairman and chief executive officer of Times Mirror Co., will take over as chairman. As chairman for 19 years of his 22 years as a Huntington trustee, Avery presided over a period of unprecedented growth. Under his leadership, the institution’s endowment tripled to more than $60 million.

Upon his retirement, he will become trustee emeritus and join a newly created Huntington advisory council of past trustees and current chairmen of the various overseer committees.

Erburu has served as one of the five Huntington trustees for 10 years. He is a former member of the Huntington’s board of overseers, a group of business and civic leaders who assist the trustees.

“I am very grateful for the opportunity to succeed Stan Avery,” Erburu said. “He has made outstanding contributions to the progress of the Huntington.” At Monday’s board meeting, two new trustees were elected: Marion Jorgensen, philanthropist and community leader who also will be the first woman to serve on the board, and Robert E. Wycoff, Arco president and chief operating officer.
