Man Hurt in Fire Caused by Blanket
Paramedics Wednesday pulled a 74-year-old man out of his burning apartment, which apparently caught on fire because of an electric blanket, fire officials said.
Marvin Goodwin was taken to Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach suffering from smoke inhalation and third-degree burns on his hands, Newport Beach Fire Capt. Ray Pendleton said.
Nearly 20 firefighters put out the 2:30 p.m. blaze at 2080 Park Newport within 15 minutes, Pendleton said.
He said the electric blanket apparently had been left on and rolled up on the bed, “causing enough heat for it to ignite.”
Fire officials estimated damage at more than $30,000.
