Duffy Waldorf could be nearly a hundred times better in the Greater Greensboro Open this year than last.

Waldorf, whose third-round 81 in 1990 led to a final score of 300 and a check for $2,562, tied the Forest Oaks Country Club record Saturday with a nine-under-par 63 and shares the lead with Bob Wolcott after three rounds.

Waldorf, a former UCLA standout, has a 12-under-par 204 total and an eye on the $225,000 first prize, a vast change from last year’s take-home pay.

“I was thinking, ‘Well, I’ve got a lot of improvement to do here in the third round,’ ” Waldorf said. “I never envisioned improving that much.”

Waldorf, 28, matched the round turned in by Sandy Lyle en route to his Greensboro title in 1988, and Waldorf’s front nine of 29 broke a tournament mark.

“I’m not sure if I’ve shot a 29. I did shoot a 28 once,” he said.

Like Waldorf, Wolcott is bidding for his first championship on the PGA Tour. He had five birdies in a 68.

Lanny Wadkins and Gene Sauers are two shots back at 10-under-par 206.

George Archer used an accurate putter to record nine birdies and shoot a course-record 64 to share the lead with Mike Hill in the Doug Sanders Celebrity Classic.

Archer, with an opening-round 68 on the Deerwood Club course at Houston; and Hill, the first-round co-leader, have two-round totals of 132, a tournament record. Hill had his second consecutive 66.

They are three shots ahead of Bobby Nicholls, at 135 after a 67. Lee Trevino, the defending champion, shot a 67 and is at 136.
