Coming off one of his most rewarding seasons on the Professional Surfing Assn. of America tour, Dino Andino made a big mistake early this season.

Andino, defending PSAA champion, was supposed to be one of the top 32-seeded surfers for the Huntington Beach Open. But he was late turning in his entry and was forced to compete in the trial rounds Wednesday.

The mistake proved costly. Andino won his first-round heat but was eliminated in the second round by Mike Parsons of San Clemente and Shane Dorian of Haleiwa, Hawaii.

Andino struggled finding waves in the mushy one- and two-foot surf at Huntington State Beach.

“I’m (mad),” Andino said. “I blew it.

“You just couldn’t find anything out there.”

Andino said he won’t make this mistake again. He said he has his entries in order for his next two contests.

“I’m going to be a different surfer in these next two contests,” he said. “That’s for sure.”

Andino wasn’t the only surfer battling the small waves. So was Marty Thomas of Long Beach.

“I just grabbed two or three mushburgers and went with them,” said Thomas, who grew up in Seal Beach. “I wasn’t happy with my surfing. But when I looked around, no one else was doing anything, either.”

Thomas, a runner-up to Todd Holland at the Op Pro last summer, won his second-round heat and advances to today’s third round.

The five-day contest has drawn a few of the top competitors from the Assn. of Surfing Professionals world tour, including Parsons, Thomas and Richie Collins of Newport Beach.

Dylan Christensen of Laguna Niguel, one of several amateurs competing, won his second-round heat by edging Peter Miller.

Christensen, a junior at Dana Hills High School, is a regular at National Scholastic Surfing Assn. events. But he has surfed only a few PSAA competitions.

“I probably won’t turn pro until after my senior year,” Christensen said. “I haven’t done very well at these (PSAA) contests. My best finish was something like 97th place last year.”
