Train Hits, Kills Driver Who Ignored Barrier

A 29-year-old Arleta man was killed early Friday when he ignored a railroad-crossing guard arm on the Southern Pacific line in North Hollywood and his car was struck by a train, authorities said.

The motorist’s name was withheld until relatives could be notified.

The train’s conductor told Los Angeles police he had sounded his horn two or three times as he entered the crossing at Tujunga Avenue and Sherman Way when he saw a white Nissan Sentra drive around the crossing guard and onto the track, Officer Bill Rice said.

The conductor, unable to avoid the motorist, took three-quarters of a mile to stop the train, Rice said. The accident occurred about 1:45 a.m.
