Because of its size and popularity in the community, Sylmar Park was one of three San Fernando Valley parks chosen in September to be part of a pilot year-round day-camp program. The program, designed to handle 50 to 75 children, was developed in conjunction with the Los Angeles Unified School District’s decision to go to a year-round schedule.

“Basically, we wanted to offer children who might be on vacation from school a place to come and have a good time,” said Mike Johnson, director at the park for 12 years. “It’s a very necessary program because of the new school schedule.”

With completion of the park’s new full-size gymnasium two years ago, Johnson has helped develop a basketball program that includes 22 youth and 18 adult teams. The park is also known for its youth baseball, which accommodates 350 children from the ages of 6 to 15 each spring. Registration is in progress for the park’s youth baseball, sponsored by the city’s Recreation and Parks Department.
