Police said they have several leads and are aggressively investigating a drive-by shooting that killed 18-year-old Luis Hernandez of Los Angeles and wounded a 13-year-old girl.

The shooting occurred early Sunday morning as a group of people were standing on the corner of La Habra Boulevard and Idaho Street.

Investigators “have lots of avenues and possibilities,” said Sgt. Michael Moore. “There were a lot of people standing on that corner” who have to be interviewed. He declined comment on whether any of the witnesses had seen the license plate of the car involved in the shooting.

“I wish I could tell you we’ve got somebody in custody,” he said.

Moore said the shooting was gang-related and took place in front of a house “believed to be a gang residence.”

Hernandez had attended a dance at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church earlier in the evening, Moore said. Father Justin McCarthy, the pastor of the church, said the dance had been an adult event for the Latino community and there was “no direct link” between the dance and the shootings.

Moore said the female victim was a runaway from her home in Los Angeles and had been living in the gang house but it was not known if she was a gang member. He could not confirm reports that she was on probation.

Her name was not released because police could not find a family member to notify, Moore said, but she was reportedly in good condition at an undisclosed hospital in Los Angeles.
