Former Washington Redskin quarterback Doug Williams was awarded a lifetime stipend of $513 weekly from the team as compensation for an off-season back injury that effectively ended his playing career.
The Redskins had fought the compensation, which could be worth $1 million or more, on grounds that the injury was not incurred during the course of employment, and that football is not a lifetime occupation. Williams, 35, injured his back in 1989 on a treadmill at his home.
The award was made by a D.C. hearings appeal examiner.
