Creating a Controversy: Biology Teacher’s Biblical Presentation at School

The Mission Viejo school district is proving how unscientific the Board of Education’s guidelines on teaching evolution really are. In the name of science, they say the science teachers can teach only one method of creation and that is evolution.

So a science teacher encourages critical thinking by presenting both the theory that man was created by a designer and the theory that man evolved by spontaneous generation, called evolution. Students are made aware of conflicting explanations, both of which have been around for a long time and have been believed by a wide variety of people. So who is being reprimanded? The Board of Education? Wrong. The teacher, Mr. Peloza!

As to Mr. Peloza’s private counseling, I’m sure every teacher or counselor speaks from his background and beliefs, whether it is Christianity, communism, psychology, science. All we expect is that he be honest, and we go to the one we trust.

That is why I admire Mr. Peloza’s science teaching: He refuses to teach a theory he believes is wrong without some refutation. That’s what makes him worthy of the name: teacher.
