$240,00 Netted for L.A. Orthopaedic Hospital

Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital received checks totaling $240,000 May 14, net proceeds from a luncheon, vintage fashion show and musical review celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Crippled Children’s Guild, a major fund-raising arm of the hospital. This amount represents combined fund-raising efforts of the guild’s five auxiliaries: La Canada/Flintridge, Las Amigas de Las Lomas of Palos Verdes, Las Vecinas of Calexico and the Palos Verdes-based Las Madrecitas and Las Ninas de Las Madrecitas.

* St. John’s Hospital Child Study Center, a facility that provides psychiatric, psychological and educational services to children, netted $385,000 at its 10th annual Jimmy Stewart Relay Marathon April 14. The event, co-hosted by Jimmy Stewart and Robert Wagner, has raised more than $2 million since its inception in 1982.

* Children’s Institute International will receive more than $88,000, proceeds from the Colleagues’ April 28 “Glamour Sale” in Santa Monica. Proceeds will be used to help rehabilitate abused children and their families. Some of the retailers who donated items were Bill Blass, Fred Hayman, I. Magnin and Fred Joailliers Inc.

* Friends of French Art greeted more than 500 guests at its May 4 benefit garden luncheon and fashion show sponsored by Hermes-Paris at the Villa Narcissa in Palos Verdes. Net proceeds of $30,000 were raised with $25,000 to be donated to the Corcoran Gallery in Washington to restore the Salon Dore. Three students will share the balance through art restoration fellowships.

* Institute for Families of Blind Children received a check May 8 for $240,000 from Vistas, a group of 50 South Bay volunteers who annually raise money for blind children in the Los Angeles area. An additional $30,000 went to Dr. Linn Murphee to fund a fellowship in pediatric eye research. The institute, a private, nonprofit organization, is a resource and referral service for visually handicapped children and their families.

* Los Angeles Mission is the recipient of $100,000 from the Fritz B. Burns Foundation. The money will be used to feed and clothe the hungry and aid in construction of a 320-bed facility. The mission serves approximately 2,000 people a day.

* More than 29 South Bay Philanthropies and Peninsula High School Senior Scholarships will reap benefits of $145,000 netted April 13 by the Palos Verdes Junior Women’s Club. The “Join Hands and Hearts” auction event was chaired by Jerrie Short.

* Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ newly opened Center for Motion Picture Study in Beverly Hills on May 23 received a $25,000 contribution from the Alfred J. Hitchcock Foundation for its endowment campaign.

* Food Partnership, Child and Family Services, Centinela Hospital Foundation, California School of Professional Psychology, Ocean Park Community Center, L.A. Educational Partnership and other social service organizations will share more than $367,000 of California Community Foundation’s Spring quarter grants.

* Child Guidance Center (Santa Ana), Bienvenidos Children’s Shelter (West Covina), Bienvenidos In-Home Support Project (East Los Angeles) and El Centro De Amistad (Canoga Park)--all shelters that aid to child abuse victims--will share almost $200,000 raised by station KVEA’s May 29 “De Mi Corazon” four-hour telethon broadcast from Glendale and Disneyland. Sponsors were El Pollo Loco, McDonald’s, Pacific Bell Corporate, Pacific Bell Directory, Zest Soap, Beneficial Management, Los Defensores, Avon, PepsiCo, Casanova-Pendril and Dearden’s.

* AIDS Project Los Angeles and Pediatric AIDS Foundation will share a total of $160,000 raised at Focus on AIDS III, a photo auction held May 21 at the Directors Guild of America. The auction, preview and party, attended by 700 guests, sold more than 130 works by photographers Avedon, Sid Avery, Micha Baram, Rebecca Blake, Greg Gorman, George Hurrell, Pulitzer Prize winner William Snyder and others. Jubilaeum hosted the event.
