Hal Sutton shot a six-under-par 65 to take a one-stroke lead over Greg Norman and Billy Andrade after two rounds of the Kemper Open Friday at Potomac, Md.
Sutton, vying for his first tournament victory since 1986, had three birdies and an eagle over the final seven holes. Overall, he has 10 birdies and one bogey and is at 11-under-par 131.
Norman, who started on the back nine, had eight birdies in a round of 65. But he missed a chance to share the lead when he hit into the rough on No. 7 and took a bogey.
Finishing about six hours after Sutton and Norman, Andrade shot a 64 to tie the tournament record held by several golfers. He had an eagle and two birdies over the first five holes, then returned after a 47-minute lightning delay to get four birdies over the last six holes.
Bob Gilder, who shared the first-round lead with Scott Gump, was tied with Bill Cochran, two strokes back at 133. Gump is at 135.
Rookie Michelle Estill not only made the cut for a change, she held the second-round lead at the LPGA Rochester International at Rochester, N.Y.
Estill, who has missed the cut in nine of 12 tournaments this year, shot her second consecutive four-under-par 68 to lead Chris Johnson, Beth Daniel and Colleen Walker by one stroke.
Estill, 28, a Scottsdale, Ariz., native who joined the tour in October, had five birdies and one bogey.
Bob Charles and Rocky Thompson, the mayor of Taco, Tex. (pop. 138), were tied at six-under 64 after the first round of a Seniors tournament at Scarborough on the Hudson, N.Y.
Chi Chi Rodriguez, who leads the Senior Tour with four victories and $400,333, was a stroke behind at 65 along with four others.
Defending champion Lee Trevino had a 66 after arriving in New York at 3 a.m. Friday. He was in the Texas the night before to attend the high school graduation of his daughter, Troy.
Trevino rushed his final putt on the 18th green to avoid the heavy rains that suspended play for 1 hour 45 minutes.
Seve Ballesteros of Spain shot his second consecutive six-under 66 and took a four-shot lead after two rounds of the British Masters at Woburn, England.
Ballesteros’ closest rivals are Mark Calcavecchia, Keith Waters of England and Eamon Darcy of Ireland. Calcavecchia matched Ballesteros’ 66, and Waters and Darcy shot 67s.
