Keeping Busy Is Child’s Play : SAN GABRIEL VALLEY SUMMER

San Gabriel Valley cities and institutions are offering a full menu of vacation activities and diversions for children this summer, whether they are in pursuit of academic excellence or just after a totally excellent amusement park excursion.

For the intellectually inclined, Claremont is offering a computer science class for children ages 4 to 12.

Thrill-seekers might want to sign up for Alhambra’s city-sponsored trips to Magic Mountain or Raging Waters.

And traditionalists can take their pick of day camps, city-sponsored arts and crafts classes and swimming and tennis lessons.

Here are some of the offerings available in the San Gabriel Valley this summer.

Alhambra

The Golden Bear Day Camp will be held weekdays from June 24 to Aug. 30 for children ages 6 to 11 at Almansor and Granada parks. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Lunches and afternoon snacks will be provided. Cost is $80 per two-week session, and $25 extra for extended hours, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Each session includes a field trip, arts and crafts, movies, sports and games. Call (818) 570-5081.

Some city-sponsored amusement trips include Magic Mountain on July 3, $18 per person; Raging Waters in San Dimas on July 17, $12; Santa’s Village in the San Bernardino Mountains on July 31, $10; Knott’s Berry Farm on Aug. 14, $18. Altadena

The Altadena Public Library, 600 E. Mariposa St., is sponsoring a reading program entitled “Bookbeat: Music to Your Eyes,” from June 24 to Aug. 5. Children will sign a contract agreeing to read a minimum of six books over the six-week period. Parents may read to their preschoolers.

In other library activities, ballet and folk dance workshops will be offered at the library on Tuesdays and story time for preschoolers will take place on Wednesdays. Arcadia

Day camp for first- through seventh-graders will be held weekdays from June 17 to Aug. 16 at Wilderness Park on Highland Vista Drive. Camp hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cost is $55 per week. The fee includes daily milk, transportation, insurance, a camp T-shirt, swimming, crafts, archery, hiking, group games, nature study, a cookout, and a special event or overnight camp out. From July 22 to 26, a sports camp will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Arcadia High School, 180 Campus Drive for fourth- through seventh-graders. The $50 per week cost includes beginning swimming, football, baseball, basketball, soccer, bowling, and exercise. Call (818) 574-5432.

A resident camp for fourth- through eighth-grade children will be held at Camp Buckhorn in Idyllwild from Aug. 4 to 10. Azusa

Baldwin Park

The city will sponsor supervised activities weekdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 11 elementary schools for children ages 3 to 18 from July 1 to Sept. 30. Free lunch will be provided. Aquatics programs will be held at the city’s recreation center, 4100 Baldwin Park Blvd., and Sierra Vista High School, 3600 Frazier St. T-ball for children ages 5, 6, and 7 will be held at the community center. The Los Angeles County Public Library, 4181 Baldwin Park Blvd., will offer a summer reading program beginning at 11 a.m. June 28. Free movies, crafts, stories, refreshments, and games will be at the same time on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Music and crafts will start July 5 for preschoolers and parents. Claremont

The city has scheduled a summer camp for children ages 5 to 12 from June 17 to Aug. 30. Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Activities include movies, games, roller-skating, swimming and bowling. Beginning golf classes for children 7 and older will be held at Claremont Golf Course, 1550 N. Indian Blvd. Two six-week courses will be held June 19 to July 24 and Aug. 14 to Sept. 18, each Wednesday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Cost is $40, plus $1.50 weekly for balls and $5 for a greens fee. Covina

Summer day camp for children 5 to 11 will be held June 26 to Sept. 6 at several elementary schools from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $50 per week, and $75 for extended hours of 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The fee includes excursions, snacks, games and crafts. There will also be free programs at the public library, 234 N. 2nd Ave. A reading club for children from preschool to eighth grade will convene July 1 to Aug. 17. Children will receive a prize for every five books they read up to 50 books. Registration begins July 1. There will be weekly story times at 11 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesdays and 3:30 to 4 p.m. Thursdays. Diamond Bar

A youth baseball program for children 6 to 14 will be held at Heritage Park in cooperation with the Heritage Park Recreation Council. The program is from July 6 to Aug. 31. Duarte

The city will offer supervised park activities daily from noon to 5 p.m. at various school and park sites. Classes in ballet, bowling, golf, jazz, karate, tap, gymnastics and tennis will be offered. El Monte

Recreational swimming will be offered weekdays and Saturdays from June 21 to Aug. 30 at El Monte City Swimming Pool, 3130 Tyler Ave. Hours are 1:30 to 4 p.m. weekdays and 12:30 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. It costs 50 cents for people under 17 and $1 for adults. Call (818) 580-2213.

The city and El Monte High School will offer a program for teen-agers from noon to 5 p.m. at El Monte High, 3048 Tyler Ave., from July 1 to Aug. 9. No registration is required. The program will feature beach trips, table tennis, billiards, music, table games, arts and crafts.

Glendora

Several classes will be held at the Rotary Scout Hut, 435 E. Dalton Ave. A Wednesday computer class for ages 4 to 11 costs $75. The first session will be June 26 to July 17. The second session will be July 24 to Aug. 14. Hours for different age groups vary. A week-long physics fundamentals class will begin July 15. The Glendora Unified School District is offering a 10-week summer day camp for the district’s elementary students at La Fetra School, 547 Bennett Ave., from June 17 to Aug. 23. Hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Activities include arts, crafts, games, and field trips to Jurupa Mountain Cultural Center, Cabrillo Marine Museum, and the Gene Autry Western Heritage Museum. Irwindale

La Puente

La Verne

A summer T-ball league will be offered from July 10 to Aug. 24 for children 4 and 5. Birth certificates are required. Games will be held on Saturdays between 9 a.m. and noon. Monrovia

Pasadena

The Pasadena Unified School District is offering free summer school for third- through 11th-grade students who are enrolled in the district. Pomona

The city and the San Gabriel School District will provide a free hot lunch for youngsters under 18 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. weekdays from June 25 to Aug. 23 at Rosemead and Garvey parks, and at Williard, Fern, Williams, Rice and Emerson schools.

San Dimas

Free recreation programs will be provided at Gladstone School, Ladera Serra Park, Loma Vista Park, Marchant Park and Pioneer Park, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays from June 24 to Aug. 22. The Episcopal Church of Our Savior, 535 W. Roses Road, will sponsor a weekday vacation Bible school 9 a.m. to noon from Aug. 12 to 23 for children ranging from preschoolers to sixth-graders. The city swimming pool at 1720 W. Merced Ave. will be open from June 24 to Sept. 15. Lessons will cost $13 for residents and $16 for non-residents. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays, with recreational swimming at 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Registration will be held at the pool from 9 a.m. to noon on June 8, 15, and 22.
