A Buena Park man who had told his stepson he was distraught and depressed killed himself Monday morning by jumping off a pedestrian overpass onto the Artesia Freeway, police said.

The man, whose identity was withheld, was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:30 a.m., Police Sgt. Terry Branum said.

Branum said the 44-year-old man told his stepson he was going to jump off a bridge. The stepson called police, who then searched the area for the man’s pickup truck.

They found it near the freeway on Valley View Street. It was then that they saw him standing on the pedestrian overpass, Branum said.

However, before police were able to talk the man down, he jumped onto the westbound side of the freeway and was struck by a big-rig truck.

The freeway was partially closed for more than two hours, police said.
