For the third time, guard Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls was selected as the Sporting News NBA player of the year. Don Chaney of the Houston Rockets was voted coach of the year. Jordan received 134 votes to 18 for runner-up Magic Johnson of the Lakers. David Robinson of the San Antonio Spurs received 17 votes, followed by Charles Barkley of the Philadelphia 76ers, with 12.
