A Huntington Beach bicyclist was struck and killed by a motorist Monday night as he attempted to cross busy Beach Boulevard, police said.

The bicyclist, identified Tuesday as John Acosta, 50, was pronounced dead on arrival at Pacifica Community Hospital, Police Officer J.B. Hume said.

Hume said Acosta was pedaling his bicycle northbound on Beach Boulevard at about 8:45 p.m. when he neared the intersection of Memphis Avenue.

Acosta darted into the thoroughfare, jumping the raised center divider with his bicycle, Hume said.

“I guess he was turning around,” Hume said.

As he neared the curb on the southbound side of Beach Boulevard, he was struck by a motorist who was unable to stop in time.

The motorist was not charged in the accident, Hume said, adding that the street appeared to be well-lighted.
