Water is expected to start flowing again Sunday through the Pomerado pipeline that supplies water to much of south and east San Diego County, officials said Friday.

Water delivery has been halted since Sunday to the Helix, Otay, Sweetwater, Padre Dame, Lakeside and Riverview water districts, which serve more than 550,000 people.

Repairs were made on six sections of pipe where it crosses the Miramar National Air Station east of Interstate 15, a spokesman for the San Diego County Water Authority said. The 144 feet of corroded concrete pipe were replaced with steel.

Workers expect to complete the $700,000 repair job today, 24 hours are needed to cure the concrete being poured around the steel pipe, water officials said. After the concrete cures, it will take about 14 hours to refill the 84-inch pipeline.

During the shutdown, the affected water agencies drew from stored water, and residents were asked to cut back on outdoor and non-essential indoor use. Once service resumes, the agencies will continue the 20% cutback program in effect countywide because of the drought.
