SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The cold wind whipped in off the Pacific Ocean at Ventura Raceway on Friday night, chilling the 1,886 in attendance. But Lynn Brader of Somis drove his hot-running Chevrolet Nova to victory in the 20-lap Street Stock main event.

Brader, who lost the main event in a photo finish by less than a foot last week after getting caught in traffic, did not succumb to the same fate this time.

Starting in fourth position, Brader moved into the lead past Port Hueneme’s Jim Firsich on Lap 11 and he continued to widen the margin through the remainder of the race en route to his first victory of the season.

Firsich finished second and Mark Heurung of Ventura was third. Season points leader Paul Moore of Oak View was fourth.

Santa Paula’s Jeff Drake won his second Mini Stock 20-lap main event of the season to tighten the season points lead of Ventura’s Marty Desbrow, who finished last in a 19-car field. Gary Swenson of Ventura and Pat Garrety of Oxnard finished second and third.

Moore recorded his fifth Street Stock eight-lap heat race victory of the season and Gary Garvin of Ventura won his first race of the season. Zeke DeRose of Sun Valley drove to the other Street Stock heat win.

Joe Silva of Port Hueneme drove to his first Mini Stock eight-lap heat race win of the season. Steve Rowe of Fillmore and Drake also picked up Mini Stock heat wins.
