A man was killed and his girlfriend wounded late Friday as they sat in a parked car in front of an apartment complex in Orange, and police spent Saturday searching for a 23-year-old man suspected in the shootings.

Dead at the scene was Martin Valesquez, 23, of Orange. The woman, Guillerma Torrez, 18, who lived in that block, was in stable condition Friday at the UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange.

Police say the suspect, Sergio Villalobos of Orange, may have had a past relationship with the young woman.

The gunman had apparently walked up to the couple on foot, fired several shots and fled in Valesquez’s car, leaving the couple lying in the street.

Martha Simon, manager of the Starlite Apartments, said she and her husband, William, were watching television when they heard the shots.

“It was real loud; we knew it was shots,” she said. “First it was two shots, and then it sounded like four more.”

Simon said she ran outside because she feared that the shooting had occurred in one of her apartments, and yelled to her husband to call 911.

When she got out to the sidewalk, she said, the Camaro was already gone, and the victim was on the pavement with the woman lying on top of him.

“She was yelling, ‘Oh God! Oh God!’ in Spanish,” Simon said.

Simon added that a small crowd that gathered around did not attempt to help the woman because no one knew at first that she had been shot.

“We only thought she was upset about her boyfriend,” Simon said.

Other witnesses at the scene said the couple was parked there because the young woman’s apartment was near the Starlite Apartments.

Villalobos is described as 5 feet, 5 inches tall and weighing about 160 pounds.
