THE CAPITAL OF HIP

In Jill Stewart’s insightful article on Santa Monica, certain statements were attributed to me that I never said. I appreciate the chance to clarify.

I do believe that Santa Monica is in danger of losing its soul as a human-scale community due to overdevelopment. The fault is not only the developers’ and city bureaucrats’, but also the pleasure principle of the 30-somethings. The new mall (excuse me, the Promenade) is the site of 45 alcohol permits, 25 movie screens and some 30 restaurants. This will mean, in time, another Westwood.
