SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Paul Moore of Oak View proved once again that he is the driver to beat at Ventura Raceway this season.

For the fourth time in seven Street Stock racing dates, Moore outpowered, outdrove and outdistanced the field to take the checkered flag in a 20-lap oval track main event Friday night.

Moore moved up from fourth place and powered past Camarillo’s Bill Brandt on Lap 2 to take the lead in a race marred by spin outs. Five yellow flags gave the 17-car field numerous shots at Moore, but no one was able to take advantage of the restarts and Moore won easily in his Camaro.

Dave Hume of Ventura finished second with Jim Firsich of Port Hueneme third and Harley Barrett of Camarillo fourth.

Ventura’s Pat Sidoti drove to his first career win at Ventura with a wire-to-wire triumph in the eight-lap Street Stock figure-eight main event. Cody Russell and Steve Morris, both of Ventura, finished second and third.

Mike Spencer of Oxnard put on a skillful move, going high in Turn 2 and crossing down low in Turn 3 on the second lap to get past Ventura’s Doug Thornton and go on to an eight-lap Mini Stock figure-eight main-event victory.

Rookie driver Jeff Stein of Oxnard and Joe Silva of Port Hueneme took second and third.

Mini Stock eight-lap heat-race winners were Gary Swenson of Ventura, Jim Jewett of Oxnard and Steve Rowe of Fillmore.

Jim Powell, Jr. of Cypress, Barrett and Moore each recorded eight-lap Street Stock heat-race wins.

Hume and Jeff Drake of Santa Paula each won four-lap trophy dashes, Hume taking the Street Stock race and Drake the Mini Stock event.
