Initiative Calls for Two-Thirds Majority on Gay Rights Bills
A group headed by an Orange County fundamentalist minister is sponsoring an initiative that would change the state Constitution by requiring overwhelming voter approval of gay rights legislation, Atty. Gen. Dan Lungren announced Monday.
The ballot measure, proposed the Rev. Louis P. Sheldon, has been submitted as the Legislature is considering a bill outlawing housing or job discrimination based on sexual orientation. Gov. Pete Wilson said he would likely sign the bill.
Lungren said the proposed initiative seeks to block or repeal any civil rights or anti-discriminatory guarantees based on sexual orientation unless voters ratify such measures by a two-thirds majority.
