* Crescenta Valley High School students Kevin Millikan and David Ostash were selected by Verdugo Hills American Legion Post 288 to attend the California Golden American Legion Boys’ State. They will take part in civics workshops at Cal State Sacramento next week.

* Robert H. Lee, a June graduate of Hoover High School, has received an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point. Robert, the son of Glendale residents Bong Ik and Young Lon Lee, lettered in volleyball and received academic awards in science, geometry and U.S. history. He plans a career as an Army officer.

* It may come as a surprise that the highest-paid executives in the Glendale area do not hail from the Brand Boulevard banking district, but lowly Glassell Park. In fact, a Times survey of compensation at California corporations found that the top four in this area work for the same company on San Fernando Road. Last year, CalMat, a distributor of rock, sand and aggregate, paid $828,336 in salaries, bonuses and stock options to Executive Vice President Ronald C. Hadfield. That was $180,000 more than the total of CalMat’s President and Chief Executive Officer A. Frederick Gerstell, who is fourth. The difference was that Hadfield got $571,632 in stock options, compared to none for the chief.

* Susie Lee of Los Feliz won $500 in the 1991 essay contest of the Los Angeles-based Skirball Institute of American Values. Her essay, “Breaking the Chains of Inferiority,” placed second in the contest, conducted in seven Western states.
