Bernard R. Green; Retired Pharmacist

Bernard R. Green, who worked as a pharmacist for Thrifty drugstore in Mission Hills for 20 years, has died at a Woodland Hills hospital. He was 78.

A longtime Granada Hills resident, Green died Monday of heart attack, said his wife, Dorothy Green.

Born in Rochester, Minn., he graduated from University of Minnesota in 1938 and served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After he was discharged, Green owned and operated a drugstore in Houston, Minn.. He moved to California in 1956. Green worked briefly for Veterans Administration Hospital in Sepulveda before starting with Thrifty in Mission Hills in 1957. He worked as a pharmacist with the drugstore until his retirement in 1977.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years; son, John B. Green of Hesperia, Calif.; brothers, Seth Green of Tempe, Ariz., and Gordon Green of Preston, Minn.; sisters, Grace McConnell of Downey and Kathryn Gatewood of Rochester, Minn.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation is planned from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at Utter-McKinley Mortuary, 11071 Columbus Ave. in Mission Hills, which is handling the arrangements. A funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church of Granada Hills, 15950 Chatsworth St., where he was a member. Burial will follow at Eternal Valley Memorial Park in Newhall. Donations can be made in Green’s name to St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church of Granada Hills.
