Tom Glavine got his 11th victory but lost his complete game when he was ejected in a brushback battle in the Atlanta Braves’ 9-2 victory Wednesday at Philadelphia.

Glavine (11-3) allowed only four hits through eight innings with a career-high 12 strikeouts before he was ejected by home plate umpire Bob Davidson for throwing at long-time Brave player Dale Murphy leading off the ninth.

In the top half of the inning, Phillie reliever Roger McDowell was ejected for hitting Otis Nixon in the shoulder after Terry Pendleton had driven in a two-out run with a single.

The victory snapped the Braves five-game losing streak.

Glavine threw four pitches to Murphy, each progressively closer. On the fourth pitch, Murphy had to jump to get out of the way, and Glavine was immediately ejected. Juan Berenguer replaced Glavine.

Montreal 3, Houston 1--Pitcher Mark Gardner broke an 0-for-27 drought with an RBI single and allowed five hits in seven innings as the Expos extended their winning streak to six games by beating the Astros at Montreal.

The victory gave Montreal its second consecutive series sweep and helped the Expos conclude their nine-game home stand with a 7-2 record.

Gardner (3-3) struck out four and walked two in winning for the third time in four decisions. He outdueled Pete Harnisch (4-5), who allowed only five hits in seven innings. Harnisch struck out six and walked two.

Cincinnati 7, New York 6--Substitute Chris Jones sliced a two-run, pinch-hit triple as the Reds beat the Mets at New York.

Rob Dibble got the last four outs, three on strikeouts, to stay perfect in 19 save chances.

Paul O’Neill hit a two-run homer and Todd Benzinger tripled, doubled and singled for the Reds. Kip Gross (1-0), acquired with Randy Myers in the trade that sent John Franco to the Mets, pitched two innings and won his first major league decision.

David Cone (6-5) was leading, 4-3, in the sixth inning when Hal Morris singled with one out and Luis Quinones singled with two out. After throwing a ball to Jeff Reed, Cone left the game because of muscle stiffness in his right shoulder.

Cone was examined by team doctor James Parkes, and the injury was described as not serious.

St. Louis 3, San Francisco 2--Jose DeLeon won his first game in a month and slumping Rich Gedman hit a two-run homer to give the Cardinals a victory over the Giants at San Francisco and a sweep of a three-game series.

DeLeon (3-5) fell behind on a first-inning homer by Will Clark, but allowed only an unearned run after that in winning for the first time since May 22. He went seven innings and gave up five hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. Lee Smith worked the final 1 1/3 innings for his 18th save.

San Francisco starter John Burkett (4-4) walked lead-off batter Pedro Guerrero on four pitches in the seventh inning, and Gedman connected for his first homer of the season with two out and the Cardinals trailing, 2-1. Gedman was one for 30 until he singled in the fifth inning, his first hit since April 24.

San Diego 6, Pittsburgh 5--Tim Teufel’s two-run, two-out single in the eighth inning gave the Padres a victory over the Pirates at San Diego.

Tony Fernandez and Tony Gwynn opened the eighth with singles off reliever Neal Heaton (0-1). Vicente Palacios replaced Heaton and walked Fred McGriff to load the bases with one out. Benito Santiago struck out, but Teufel singled past second baseman Jose Lind to drive in Fernandez and Gwynn to avoid a three-game sweep.

Larry Andersen (2-0) worked the final two innings in relief of Andy Benes, and won despite allowing the Pirates to take the lead with two runs in the top of the eighth.
