Boxing at the Country Club provides a singular opportunity for eating a decent cheeseburger, while 10 feet away two men pound each other into ground beef.

The Reseda club, normally a music spot, plays pugilistic host once a month and allows patrons to sit at tables with waitresses serving food and drinks. The room holds only 1,000 people, so no one is far from the action.

“This place is like being in your living room,” said Edward Price, 42, of Sun Valley. “It’s so small. You can see the action right up close. At the Forum, you end up sitting 100 yards from the ring and it looks like two little ants in the ring.”

On a fight night, the Country Club offers at least a couple competitive bouts. Such well-known boxers as Michael Nunn and Randal (Tex) Cobb have fought there. Up-and-coming stars such as Rafael Ruelas and Frank Liles appear regularly. And the early bouts promise lots of slugging, if little skill.

The sellout audiences are another plus, tending to be friendlier than at other boxing venues around town.

The Country Club is at 18415 Sherman Way, Reseda. Tickets: $40, $30, $25 and $15. Call (818) 780-8797.
