SPORTSCOPE : Jackson Is Named Inglewood Football Coach

Angelo Jackson, who revived the football program at St. Monica High in Santa Monica, was hired this week as coach at Inglewood.

Jackson, an Inglewood resident and former fullback with the Los Angeles Express and Green Bay Packers, takes over a program that was 1-8-1 last season and 0-10 the year before.

He took over a St. Monica program in 1988 that was coming off a 2-8 season and coached the Mariners to a league title and the CIF playoffs. They finished 9-2 and Jackson was named The Times Westside coach of the year. In three seasons at St. Monica, Jackson was 23-9.

He replaces Orville Echols, who resigned after two seasons.

Randy and Sinjin’s Sideout Restaurant in El Segundo will hold a fund-raising event on Tuesday to benefit Special Olympics.

The evening will feature appearances by celebrities, an autograph session, a silent auction, raffles as well as a “triathlon” contest in basket shooting, golf ball putting and electronic darts.

Admission is $3 for adults 21 and older. The restaurant is at 2171 E. Rosecrans Ave.

The Youth Sports Festival Badminton Tournament, featuring some of Southern California’s top young players in what will be an Olympic sport in 1992, will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Manhattan Beach Badminton Club, 516 18th St.

The tournament will feature single, doubles and mixed doubles competition in 11-13, 15 and 18 age groups. Competition will run from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. There will be spectator seating and admission is free.

Mira Costa High basketball Coach Glenn Marx will hold his Mustang advanced basketball summer clinic Friday through July 26 for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders at the Mira Costa boys’ gym.

The clinic will include individual skill work, specialized training techniques, video shooting instruction and guest lecturers. Clinic fee is $50 and advanced registration is required. Forms are available at Manhattan Beach City Hall, 1400 Highland Ave. Information: (213) 545-5621.

Applications are available for several competitions to be held as part of the annual International Surf Festival, Aug. 2-4 at various beach cities.

Events open to the public include the Dwight Crum pier-to-pier (Hermosa to Manhattan) swim, the Dick Fitzgerald two-mile beach run (Torrance), the six-person volleyball tournament (Manhattan Beach pier), international bodysurfing (Manhattan Beach), fishing derby at Hermosa Pier and body boarding (Manhattan pier). In a men’s professional volleyball tournament last weekend at Philadelphia, Sinjin Smith and Randy Stoklos of Pacific Palisades defeated Andrew Smith of Pacific Palisades and Bruk Vandeweghe of Beverly Hills, 15-6, in the championship game.

Smith and Stoklos earned $6,825 each and Smith and Vandeweghe earned $4,225 apiece. Mike Dodd of Manhattan Beach and Ricci Luyties of San Diego finished fourth. They each earned $2,600.

The men compete in Cape Cod, Mass., this weekend.
