AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Granada Hills West Routs Quartz Hill Behind Cipolla

Dave Cipolla had three hits, including a homer and a double, and drove in three runs to lead visiting Granada Hills West to a 13-4 win over Quartz Hill in a District 20 American Legion baseball game Saturday.

Heath McElwee added three runs batted in, and Manny Valencia and Scott Berger each had two hits for Granada Hills West (8-5).

Pitcher Michael Petruzates (5-1) went five innings to earn the victory, allowing seven hits and all four Quartz Hill runs while striking out six and walking seven. McElwee went the final four innings for his second save.

In other District 20 games:

Lancaster 9, Granada Hills East 7--George Boykins had three hits and two RBIs in Lancaster’s win at Antelope Valley High. Heath Fine added two hits, including a home run, and Chad Eberhardt and Jack Cox each had two hits for Lancaster (7-5).

Jeff Tagliaferri and Pablo Perez each had two hits and two RBIs for Granada Hills East (6-9), and Darrin McCatt added two doubles.

San Fernando 14, Valley (Encino-Tarzana) 2--James Encinas tossed a four-hitter and collected three hits and two RBIs to lead San Fernando at Birmingham High. Encinas (2-0) struck out two and walked two. Rick Savala added two hits and three RBIs for San Fernando (4-6), which benefited from six Valley errors and four walks. Fernando Ortega and Adel Villalobos had two hits each for San Fernando.

Woodland Hills East 7, Littlerock 1--Justin Siegel slugged a pair of doubles and Matt Allison and Benji Belfield each added two hits to pace Woodland Hills East’s 15-hit attack at Littlerock. Sean Collins had two runs batted in for Woodland Hills East (5-5).

Eagle Rock 4, Las Virgenes 3--Eagle Rock (9-4) scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning when Josh Morton uncorked a wild pitch that scored a baserunner from third.

Morton (1-1) relieved Brian Bruskrud in the sixth and allowed two hits and two earned runs in three innings to take the loss. Bruskrud left after five innings with a one-hitter and a 3-2 lead, but he walked six batters before departing.

David Jacobs and Tim Wayne each had two hits for Las Virgenes (3-8), and Jeff Meyer added a two-run double.

North Hollywood 9, Reseda 1--Kevon Connelly (1-2) tossed a four-hitter through six innings, giving up just one unearned run, to lead North Hollywood’s win. Connelly also had two hits, including a double, and drove in three runs.

Adrian Perez went three for five with two doubles and two runs scored for North Hollywood (5-8).

Woodland Hills West d. Palmdale--Woodland Hills West (8-3) won by forfeit when Palmdale was unable to field a team.

Panorama City d. Newhall-Saugus--Panorama City (8-1) won by forfeit when Newhall Saugus (2-6) was unable to field nine players.

DISTRICT 16

Westlake-Royal 17, Conejo B 3--Paul Taylor had four hits, including a double and a triple, to lead Westlake-Royal (9-3 overall, 6-3 in district play).

Dave Brown (two hits, two runs); Dave Landaker (two hits, three RBIs, two runs); James Jones (two hits, two RBIs); and Ty Varing (two hits) also contributed to the win.

Clint Harris had three hits and Steve Kulpaca two for Conejo B (0-11 in district play).

Conejo A 11, Simi Valley 7--David Skeels and Brian Sturges each had four hits and two RBIs, and Jim Chergey knocked in three runs to lead Conejo A to the win at Royal High. Bryan Corey (2-0) came on in relief of Jeff Naster, who pulled a back muscle, and allowed five hits and two earned runs through five innings. He also struck out six in gaining the victory.

Nick Brown struck out the side in the ninth to garner his second save.

Ventura 7, Oxnard 4--Alan Lovejoy fired a four-hitter, striking out eight, to lead Ventura to the win. Lovejoy walked four and allowed just two earned runs. Tim Cass and Steve Philbrook had solo home runs for Ventura (5-6).

Santa Barbara 10, Newbury Park 5--Robert Fick doubled, singled and knocked in three runs, but it wasn’t nearly enough for Newbury Park in a game played at UC Santa Barbara.
