ANAHEIM : Power Outage Affects 9,000 in Central City

Share

A power outage sparked when a metallic balloon dropped into a transformer swept through much of the central city Sunday night, knocking out electricity to 9,000 customers, authorities said.

The city utility department restored power to all users within 35 minutes after the outage occurred at 10:45 p.m., spokesman Ray Merchant said.

The outage stretched from Disneyland and Harbor Boulevard east to State College Boulevard.

Disneyland security officials said there was no loss of power to the amusement park, which stays open until 1 a.m. on summer weekends. Merchant said a circuit feeding Disneyland was knocked out by the transformer short, but because the park is a preferred customer, the damaged circuit was automatically shifted to other power lines.

Utility officials investigating the cause of the outage at the Lewis substation near Katella Avenue found fragments of a metallic balloon on a damaged circuit-breaker. Merchant said an investigation is under way to determine other potential causes for the outage.
