The death of a 16-year-old Oxnard boy struck by a pickup truck last week after an apparent dispute with its driver is being investigated as a homicide, authorities said Sunday.

Emelio Michel died of massive head injuries Friday night at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard, said Ventura County Deputy Coroner Jim Wingate.

Michel was walking to a friend’s house at 11:55 p.m. Wednesday when a black pickup pulled up alongside him, its driver exchanging words with the victim before driving off, a witness said.

A few moments later, a dark-colored pickup ran Michel down at the corner of 1st Street and Bernarda Court and sped away, authorities said.

Oxnard Police Sgt. Jeff Young said Sunday that detectives are investigating Michel’s death as a homicide but have not made any arrests.
