Juan Manuel Fangio II of Argentina gave Toyota its first victory of the year, beating Geoff Brabham in the Continental VIII IMSA Camel GT sports car race at Watkins Glen, N.Y. Fangio completed 122 laps around the 2.428-mile course during the 2 1/2-hour race, averaging a record 117.706 m.p.h. Tom Kendall of La Canada suffered multiple fractures of his right leg and a possible fracture of his left leg when his Chevrolet Intrepid hit a tire wall on Lap 61. He was airlifted to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa., for X-rays and further evaluation.
