A 26-year-old man has been charged with murder and attempted robbery in connection with a Westminster fabric store holdup in which his alleged partner was fatally shot.

Dung Van Mai, 26, was also charged with false imprisonment and aggravated assault in the June 28 holdup attempt at the Thanh Minh store, 9293 Bolsa Ave., in Little Saigon, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Chuck Middleton.

Police said the storekeeper, Quy Duc Nguyen, shot Mai and his alleged accomplice, Boa Houng Lau, 27, as the two forced his family members to a back office and tried to tie them up.

Lau, of San Gabriel, was dead on arrival at Humana Hospital-Westminster.

Middleton said Mai also beat Nguyen’s relatives--two men and an elderly woman--who were the only other people in the shop. Mai was charged with murder because he and Lau were allegedly committing a crime when Lau was killed, Middleton said.

Mai remained hospitalized in the jail ward at Western Medical Center-Anaheim. He was in fair condition.
