QUAYLE QUOTA: Where’s the last place you’d imagine seeing a record company ad for five of its current artists: National Geographic? House and Garden? Soldier of Fortune? Would you believe . . . the Quayle Quarterly, a cheeky, 20-page publication devoted to news about Dan Quayle, America’s much-lampooned Vice President? (The current issue, whose masthead offers a Capitol Correspondent, a Token Conservative and an Art Slave, features accounts of Quayle speeches, his wife Marilyn’s appearance in Vogue magazine and a report that a Canadian tourist was detained by Secret Service officers when he appeared naked on his hotel balcony after hearing sirens heralding the arrival of a Quayle motorcade--he’d just stepped out of the shower and thought there was a fire). Sire Records execs liked the magazine so much they took out an ad featuring five of their artists, including Ice-T, Dinosaur Jr. and Throwing Muses. Sire’s ad promises a free CD from any of the five acts with a new subscription order. Each artist offers a one-line assessment of Quayle, including the Judybats, who say: “Dan Quayle is a rich man’s Sancho Panza.”
