Wahneta Poteet of Camarillo has been appointed to the advisory committee that will direct Ventura County Goodwill Industries, which is building a rehabilitation facility in Oxnard.

The nonprofit agency’s new 35,000-square-foot facility will accommodate job training and placement services for about 200 disabled and disadvantaged people in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.

“I am interested in the program because I like the philosophy of helping people help themselves,” said Poteet, a financial planner and private business consultant.

The Ventura agency operates a satellite branch of Goodwill Industries of California, the Los Angeles-based parent organization that has given rise to five other autonomous Goodwills, from Kern County to San Diego County.

“The panel will consider the feasibility of breaking off and becoming independent from Los Angeles,” Poteet said.

Poteet is a 22-year resident of Ventura County. Her husband, Robert, works as a corporate administrator in Woodland Hills.

With three plants and 24 stores throughout Southern California, Goodwill earns 95% of the cost of its vocational programs by reconditioning donated household goods and used clothing, officials said.
