An Encino man and his 13-year-old son were in critical condition Sunday after their motorcycle slammed into the rear of a car stopped near a service road at Huntington State Beach, police said.

The motorcycle driver, Barry R. Sonne, 45, sustained head and internal injuries, while his son, Michael, suffered neck, rib and internal injuries. Both were taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange.

Huntington Beach Police Sgt. Luis Ochoa said the accident occurred on Pacific Coast Highway near the Santa Ana River bridge about 12:15 p.m. when the driver of a Chevrolet Impala, Angel A. Alayo, 63, of Fullerton stopped to make a right turn onto a service road that had been blocked off by a chain.

A vehicle behind Alayo’s car stopped to avoid hitting him, but Sonne failed to stop and ran into the second vehicle, throwing him and his son from the motorcycle and onto the service road, Ochoa said.

Alayo, apparently unaware that the motorcyclists had landed in front of him, continued to make a right turn, knocking a barrier on the father and dragging the son about 100 feet before coming to a stop, Ochoa said.

Only the boy was wearing a helmet, he said.

Ochoa said no arrests were made or citations issued pending an investigation.
